Unwanted textured pattern remaining after using a roller for applying paint is often called stippling.

Possible causes for stippling
• Using the wrong roller for the material / paint being applied.
• Use of wrong type of textured coating.
• Use of the wrong rolling technique and over loading of roller.
• Poor quality paint with poor flow and leveling properties

Most often it is merely choosing the wrong type of roller for the paint or material being used to paint the wall or ceiling.
