Garbage disposals with rust is not unusual but may need to have maintenance or may have a leak in the area of the rust.

Common causes for the rust

  • The connection point where the disposal is connected to the sink drain may need to be resealed with some plumbers putty or Teflon tape or paste.
  • The connection to the sink has worked loose and needs to be re-tightened
  • The mounting ring gasket or seal is damaged or cracked.
  • Disposal interior chamber has a hole or damage that allows water to drip down and rust the body.

Connection at the sink bottom

Vibration of the disposal and use may slowly wear out or deteriorate the gaskets or rings. Replacing these should stop moisture coming from this area.

Worked loose. If not properly tighten at installation, the connection may work loose and need to be tightened up.
