Block or masonry walls may crack over time. Many neighborhoods have soils or movement of soils that causes the block walls to crack.

Cracking can be due to:

  • Settlement of soils
  • Expansive soils
  • Tree roots
  • Earthquakes
  • Lack of rebar reinforcement

Generally this is not a significant concern unless it appears that the wall may fall or injure someone. Walls that are leaning significantly or move when pushed on, should be repaired.

Lack of reinforcement or grouted cells

On some walls that have not been reinforced or had the cells filled with grout, it may be possible to improve the strength of the wall by removing the top cap and placing rebar and grout in the cells.

Generally, you can add vertical rebar but not horizontal rebar under these conditions. Still, this quick fix can help improve the wall strength.

Who to consult? Masonry contractor.

Grouting, re-pointing and repairs to block walls are usually done by masonry wall contractors.
