Would it be feasible to plug a fan into a line and connect it to a rheostat for speed control if mounted on an inaccessible beam?

Hey, quick question for you. I’m thinking about installing a fan on a beam where I won’t be able to reach it to change the speed settings. Do you think it would be okay if I connected it to a rheostat instead of the usual switch? Any potential issues with that setup?
If you switch it out with something like a z-wave multi relay, you’ll be able to adjust the speed using your phone.
I think it should work, but I suggest going around the speed switch inside the box.
