I need some assistance figuring out why my toilet doesn’t automatically refill. I have to manually tap the grey thing every time, which gets really frustrating. Can you help me with this issue?
It’s likely that the float is simply getting stuck.
Dealt with a similar situation earlier today, spent around $20 on a replacement
Turn it gently with a screwdriver 🪛 in a clockwise direction a few times
We had identical ones and had to remove some tough water stains to make it move more smoothly.
Stephanie, it seems like hard water is common in our area but this toilet is actually new.
It’s more cost-effective to replace the entire fill valve. Just ensure that you are able to shut off the water. The fill valve is the component that is red and black.
The float is sticking – adjust the gray piece so the water level drops a bit more or raise it up slightly, whichever works best
Hey Ronny, I’ve tried both options but still no luck
Jennifer, it sounds like there might be heavy deposits causing the issue with the float. You can try using CLR to clean it or simply shut off the water. Another option would be to replace it, as it’s not too expensive.
The grey item can be adjusted, as others have mentioned. It’s also difficult to determine the height of the entire unit, which is adjustable as well. It appears to be relatively new.
Chances are the float is stuck. You could attempt to free it up, but these are inexpensive and simple to swap out.
Just like everyone else is suggesting, swap it out. Personally, when I switch them out I prefer to start by using a shop vac to remove any remaining water. It helps keep things cleaner.
Just go ahead and replace it. It’s a simple fix that can be done quickly.
Make sure to remove and clean the parts before replacing them. It’s a cost-free step that could potentially solve the issue.
Rebuild with the item linked below. I put these in all the toilets at my daughter’s place:

Hey , check this out! I put this kit on all my toilets at home. It’s quieter and works great. I highly recommend it
For $15, you can get a toilet rebuild kit and check out YouTube. All you need is an hour and a couple of work towels for cleanup.
If it has a slip collar to move the unit up and down, you can purchase the same unit. Simply turn off the water, move the slip collar, remove the top, then transfer the top from the new one onto it. This way, you won’t need to deal with the waterline.
You can find YouTube videos that demonstrate how to do it
Let’s switch it out.
There’s some scale buildup on it due to hard water, maybe it’s time to replace the entire thing for just $10
Can you please open up the gate valve under the bowl?
Call 1-800-4KOHLER and they’ll hook you up with free replacement parts
Hey Victoria, I’ll definitely try that out.
