Which primer and paint combination worked best for updating a 1973 home – Behr stain blocking primer with Marquee satin paint or Sherwin Williams multi purpose primer with Duration satin paint?

Just wanted to give you a quick update on my project in my 1973 home. I tested out a few primers and paints and here are my thoughts. It’s not perfect, but definitely less outdated now (goal achieved!).

For primers:
– Behr stain blocking primer: Good coverage, thick white, a little droopy but not as bad as the Marquee. Some staining came through after the first coat on the wood paneling, but it was better after the second coat. No staining visible after 2 coats of Marquee.
– SW multi-purpose primer: Thick white, easy to apply, not droopy, and it was the best one I tested.
– SW quick-drying primer: Thin white, almost transparent, easy to apply but didn’t dry any faster than the other primers.

As for paint:
– Behr Marquee satin: Very droopy, dries almost too fast, thick white pigmentation (but not one coat). Some areas peeled off when removing tape. Has a very white look and the satin finish is more glossy than SW Duration.
– SW Duration satin: Thick and easy to paint with, not droopy. The color is thin, almost needed a third coat. Feels stronger

Yeah, a client gave us that Behr paint on a project when it was still new, didn’t like it. I always prefer Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore.

I feel you, . I had a bad experience with the Marquee paint too. Nowadays, we only go for Benjamin Moore.

What does it mean when paint is described as ‘droopy’? For what it’s worth, I initially used Behr Premium Plus but always found I needed multiple coats. I’ve upgraded to Behr Ultra and have had great results. Recently, I tried Behr Dynasty on an accent wall with excellent outcomes. I never leave tape on while the paint dries. I always ensure to use a paint mixer and stir it thoroughly before pouring it out for painting, even if I purchased it that same day.

Gotcha. I’ve never tried the Marquee line either. I usually just use Kilz 2 primer for my projects. It works well unless I put too much on the roller.
