What kind of power tool should I use to cut red oak stair treads? Would a circular saw be suitable? Perhaps with a fresh blade?
I would recommend going with a sliding miter saw. The crucial factor is having a high-quality, sharp blade 👌
Choosing the correct blade is essential for the type of cut you need. A rip blade is best for cutting with the grain, while a cross-cut blade is ideal for cutting against the grain. To avoid chipping, apply a wide strip of painters tape, mark your cutting line on the tape, and then make your cut
The most precise option would be a miter saw, although you can also utilize a circular saw if you are skilled at cutting straight lines with it.
I opted to use a miter saw. Make sure to measure each one separately (or use a tread jig).
I have a sliding miter saw equipped with a high-quality blade with many teeth. Smaller blades are less likely to bend compared to 12-inch blades. So, in essence, an 8-1/4″ saw is more suitable for cutting hardwood stair treads than a 12″ saw. However, this also depends on the specific saw models being compared, as they are not all identical.
No matter what you decide to use, invest in this product. I have two – one for treads and one that I’ve modified for risers
