Where can I find replacement baseboard air returns in a custom size larger than 16 inches to avoid leaving a gap between the trim?

I’m trying to swap out my baseboard air returns, but it looks like they’re a special size. They measure 16 1/4 inches in width, but all I’m finding in stores is up to 16 inches. That’s gonna leave a gap between the trim. Any ideas on what I can do?

Try contacting an HVAC supply store or looking on ebay

Maybe we can give the old one a fresh coat of spray paint.

Find a compromise and apply caulk or install new baseboard.

When you purchase a grill, the size listed is for the opening, not the actual dimensions of the grille. Measure the return opening and buy based on that size. For extra assurance, check online at Menards or Home Depot where the description will include the exact size. It’s usually some random number.

For instance, this is being marketed as a 14” x 8”

Let’s use a small block to close the space.

How about we place a narrow strip along the wall to create a small box/reveal for it to go into?

They market those based on the opening size, not the overall dimensions. Remove it and measure the opening. My assumption is it’s a 14″ x 4″ return.
