What unexpected discovery did you and your wife make while renovating your floors, and what product ended up creating the perfect color?

Hey everyone,

So, as we were removing the shag carpet, my wife said a word that I’ve never heard her say before. The hardwood floors we were expecting turned out to be a beautiful red jarrah timber instead of the deep red stain we were anticipating.

After trying out a few not-so-great products, we finally found the perfect floor color using an Australian-made product called Commercial Quality Raw Wood Bleach. I decided against ripping up the floor and went with this bleach instead.

I think it turned out really well. We sanded off the clear lacquer, applied the raw wood bleach, let it sit for a few hours, then wiped it off. Now we have beautifully bleached timber ready to be coated.

Cheers,
Mike

Simply stunning

I really enjoyed watching my floor being revealed when the carpet was pulled back. I plan to refinish them when we renovate the kitchen and adjust the walls. Hardwood is just the best!

Do you mind sharing a link to the product? It seems really impressive!

Hey , this might be a silly question, but since wood is wood, do you think it would be okay to use that on an old dining room curio to bleach it back to its original color?

Uses Zinnser Wood Bleach for his furniture.

I love using Zinnser Wood Bleach to freshen up my furniture.

If you’re looking to remove bleach stains and restore the natural wood color, you can consider using household bleach after stripping the top coat. This will cause the grain to rise, requiring you to sand it with 220 grit. Different wood bleaches are available for lightening the wood. Oxalic acid is specifically for water stains, as well as stains left by rusty nails and screws. The key here is to choose the right bleach based on the specific goal you’re trying to achieve.

Try using a wet cloth in a small area to test how the sealant will appear. It will slightly darken the wood and you might consider bleaching it again.

The original looked really nice.

I actually prefer the original

Miloslav Stadnik

I completely agree, the original appears more appealing. But I suppose it all comes down to personal preference.

Oh wow, I also have Brazilian Walnut floors that resemble your original photo. We had them professionally stained black initially, but now they’ve returned to their original reddish color. I’ll check with my floor guy about bleaching them. We have around 2000 sq ft of it in our house!
