What type of wood should I use to run a 1×6 across the studs for a stair railing on a recently painted wall?

Hey there! So, I had someone install a stair railing on a wall that I recently painted, but they used drywall anchors and it didn’t hold up too well. I’m planning to put up a 1×6 board across the studs to make sure it’s secure this time. Any advice on how to choose the right board for this project would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So, are you proposing to install this board on the wall’s visible side and attach the railing to it? I don’t think that’s needed. Simply adjust the brackets to secure them into the studs.
