What type of insulation is typically found in a 1950s ranch house attic and how can I safely install a bathroom vent without disturbing it?

Just checked out the attic for the first time in our 1950/60’s ranch house. What kind of insulation is this stuff? Trying to avoid using the “A” word! Any tips on how to work up there? I need to install a bathroom vent. Thanks!
