What should the ideal reveal size be for a sliding glass door that is flush with the drywall, considering the previous reveal size was around 7/8 vertically?

I understand that the standard reveal for a regular door casing is 1/8 – 1/4”, but I’m having trouble finding information on the appropriate reveal for a sliding glass door that sits flush with the drywall. The previous door had a reveal size of around 7/8” vertically, but it was different horizontally. Should I stick with the same reveal size to avoid having to patch the drywall, or should I go with the 1/4” reveal? My perfectionism is starting to kick in.

Sliding doors usually have deep notches, especially at the top where the door track is. If you have a small 3/16″ reveal, your nails might end up going through the track and into the doors.

The casing measures 3.5” wide and I was considering that. If I drive nails into the studs a few inches apart and then seal with caulk to the track, would that be enough? Otherwise, I’m open to a larger gap (especially since I won’t need to repair drywall), but I wasn’t sure about the standard reveal.

Y Stover, deciding on this kind of thing comes down to personal judgment. You aim for it to appear correct, be relatively simple to accomplish, and match neighboring doors and windows in terms of height, reveal, etc. Ultimately, you need to determine which choice is most suitable for you.

Installing a new one will fit perfectly if it’s the same size. Keeping it as is.

Is thinking of going with the 1/4” wider option, that seems like the best choice.

Y Stover so you’re telling me that by just shifting a quarter inch, now there’s a 7/8 gap? Sounds like you’re all set

I’ve put in quite a few of those throughout the years

I typically fill that caulking groove with trim to give it a finished look. Cover the door about a quarter of an inch. Avoid using nails on the door. Use a small bead of non-silicone adhesive caulk in the groove. Make sure it’s water-based. Clean up any excess caulk with a damp cloth.

There are no rules when it comes to creating, so feel free to use any size trim and reveal that works for you. Thank goodness for power tools!
