What should I do next after finding lead-based paint on a bathroom door handle?

So I was just checking out the doorhandle in my bathroom, and it turns out there’s lead based paint on it. What should I do next?
Remember, the first step is to avoid consuming it.
Hey, , nice job!
Either seal it up or dispose of it. Take it outside and wear a mask while preparing it. Avoid sanding it and inhaling the dust.
How can you be sure there’s lead present?
When I noticed there was more than just the white coat on the door, I used a test kit to check it.
If lead-based paint is found under a door handle, it’s important to handle the situation with care. We usually follow steps 4 and 5 when dealing with lead paint.
1. Avoid trying to scrape, sand, or remove the paint yourself to prevent toxic particles from being released.
2. Limit access to the area to reduce exposure, especially for kids and expecting mothers.
3. Seek assistance from certified professionals in lead abatement for proper removal and disposal.
4. Check other parts of your house for lead paint to understand the full extent of the problem.
5. Implement necessary remediation steps, like repainting with non-toxic paint, as per expert advice.
Always prioritize safety and adhere to local guidelines.
Let’s have a thorough discussion about it.
What makes you think it’s lead paint?
I removed lead paint from my door 4 years ago and I’m still alive. Just avoid ingestion.
Terry ahue Hang on a sec. The lead takes about 4 years and 1 month to start working.
Terry ahue Please make sure your affairs are organized.
I’ve been removing lead paint from bridges using sandblasting for four decades without wearing respirators. Surprisingly, I haven’t encountered anyone who has died from lead poisoning so far.
That’s good to hear. Anecdotal evidence can definitely be convenient and reassuring.
Are you suggesting that lead is not harmful, doesn’t cause a range of health issues, should not be subject to regulation, does not impact one’s ability to use punctuation, or are you making a different point?
Is talking about the long-term effects of prolonged exposure.
Oh , 😁😆😇😅🤣🤣😂 maybe that’s the issue I’ve been facing for the past 5 years. 😍 🧟 I’m not sure what to say, Tim.
Hey there, seems to be in a bit of a pickle! 🤯😄😄
Just paint over it with the right encapsulation paint.
Use a gel-based stripper to remove the paint. Blue bear Lead out is effective. Remember to wear gloves and a mask, and work outdoors.
I know a few places that can remove doors for you, even if they have lead paint.
I heard that you have the option to paint over it twice or use encapsulation paint.
Simply painting over is sufficient. If you decide to sand the door, make sure to control the dust and wear a mask.
Inhaling dust or ingesting paint chips is a concern due to lead content
In my opinion, I’d just replace the door. Trying to remove all that with the associated risks is too much for me
Did you already check it or are you just guessing? And remember, it’s crucial not to consume it. The real concern is ingesting lead, as mentioned above.
Add some shine to those rough areas before painting the door, no sweat
The floor tiles appear to be in good condition.
Doors can be tricky, as they may create dust even if encapsulated and rubbing against the door frame. Lead Poisoning Prevention with Lead Safe Mama is a valuable resource, but it’s best to avoid taking any risks and simply replace it. It may also be helpful to reach out to the city and inquire about their xrf detection program to identify any other lead concerns in the house.
Free chips are available.
If it’s a solid door, it’s definitely worth saving by giving it a fresh coat of paint. It should be safe as long as no one chews on it or breathes in the sawdust after sanding. Once properly sealed, it should meet approval and pass inspection.
So, like everyone else mentioned, the main concern is inhaling the particles when sanding. The best approach is to use a suitable chemical stripper to remove the paint in a contained gel-like form instead of generating dust. Using a heat gun is not recommended as it releases lead fumes.
I think stripping it is the way to go because paint degrades over time and layering paint on top of paint on top of paint results in a subpar finish eventually.
If your door has it… All the doors and old trim have it too… you can just take it outside, wear a mask, sand it down, paint it, and seal it in… I grew up with lead paint too… 🤪 and I’m almost fine
Time to invest in a fresh prehung door
Instead of eating it, paint over it.
Cathie and Eddie Barnes Heh, we used to eat that as kids and we’re still fine. 😂
Yup, you definitely are 🤓
Oh my goodness! A sturdy old door!!
Alright, don’t panic…. Avoid consuming the paint, refrain from sanding it and inhaling it for a buzz…..haha
Next step, purchase paint remover gel, use plastic scrapers to strip it off, and continue until all the paint is removed…. Then begin anew with fresh paint..
I might consider getting a new place. haha
When sanding lead paint, make sure to have a high-quality filter on your shop vac and wear a mask specifically designed for lead paint. The best approach is to use a mask made for lead paint, a heat gun to strip it off, and then clean up with mineral spirits. After that, you can sand the surface (though wearing the mask and filter is still important, but not as crucial after the paint is stripped).
It’s never a good idea to apply heat to lead paint as it can be harmful. The worst way to remove it is by wet sanding and painting over it.
The speed heater cobra actually works well. With a properly vented area, HEPA vacuumed space, and wearing PPE, it’s safe. Sanding, even when wet, is considered the worst by many restoration professionals I’ve spoken to, due to airborne particles.
Definitely do not lick that.
Maybe consider licking it, depending on the outcome you’re aiming for
Get a different door.
Knock down the house
Take the door outside and sand it down. ‘t forget to wear your personal protective equipment, as others have mentioned. Sanding the entire door will be a tough job, so I suggest just smoothing it out and giving it a fresh coat of paint. You may also need some bonding paint beforehand.
You know, sanding lead paint can spread lead particles unnecessarily. But you can just paint over it with latex instead. Using a chemical stripper might be a better option than sanding. Although, dealing with just one lead-painted door in the house won’t really solve the problem, right? Just cover it with new paint to prevent chipping – that should do the trick.
What I meant was to make it smooth. That chipped area will still be visible even with new paint, and I did suggest using a bonding paint. I’m not sure which one though. Personally, I think it would be best to throw out that door and replace it with a new one.
That sounds more reasonable. I was under the impression you wanted to sand the whole door. Most people with a house built before the 1970s have lead paint present, so changing just one door won’t make a big difference.
1978 👍🏽
I appreciate it, sir.
Oh
So you’re suggesting using latex?
The paint on this door is actually oil-based.
Using latex would likely result in peeling.
Actually, that’s not completely accurate. The majority of lead block paint is actually acrylic paint. Latex paint is generally not recommended for covering lead paint.
Hey, , you’re absolutely right. I should have considered that more carefully.
Let’s just burn everything down
Can you tell if it’s lead paint?
If you see it on your door…
The sand is damp. Make sure to seal it with an oil-based primer.
Bring in a Hazmat crew to handle the cleanup.
Prepare and paint it, close it tightly.
Remove it, bring it outside and remove the outer layer.. it’s harmless unless consumed. The sky is not collapsing.
Reattach the handle
Use an oil-based paint to seal it up. No need to stress about it.
Just get rid of the entire door, you know? Go to Home Depot and get a new door. Do this for every door in your home.
Look for painting companies specialized in stripping paint from doors and trim molding. Search for options in your area. It’s best not to attempt it yourself and put your health and your neighbors’ at risk.
How do you determine if it’s lead paint? Do you have something that resembles it?
Typically judges by the flavor. It has an unusual taste and texture.
Humorous
Consider hiring professionals to either remove or paint it, just like others have suggested. If you end up creating dust, make sure to take necessary precautions. No need to panic.
1. Take it easy.
2. Please refrain from eating the door.
3. Cover the paint with more paint.
4. Just keep avoiding eating the door.
5. Be aware that lead poisoning is caused by consistent, long-term exposure to inhaled or ingested lead.
I’m not sure what you mean by that.
Lead does have its uses, especially in the x-ray room where it can be helpful when applied correctly.
But should its ability to block electromagnetic radiation really be a reason for banning it from paint, gasoline, and other products?
Someone finally mentioned it… It makes me want to watch those old school emergency drill videos. Walk, don’t run… you know the ones! 😂😂
Hey , I’m still a bit confused. Are you suggesting that Lead was removed from gasoline and paint because it actually provided protection against electromagnetic radiation? Can you clarify for me?
Hey , got it. Thanks for the heads up. I totally understand where you’re coming from now. I don’t really have to worry about all that because I’ve done my own research, live off the grid, and wear a tin foil hat 24/7. – Charles McGill from Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM) at 98 Marquette Ave NE in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Hey , do you have kids? They chew on everything, like EVERYTHING. That’s why lead in paint was outlawed – it can lower IQ and negatively impact development. The other day, my toddler was chewing on the window sill. Have you ever been asked if you did that as a kid in a way that implies you’re not too bright?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also came across that!
Relieved to hear I’m not the only one feeling this way 🤗
I honestly think that it’s more likely for the government to eliminate something because it’s detrimental to us. 😂
Precisely
Since you’ve done your research, I’m sure you can easily tell me the names of your sources. Am I correct?
What in the world are you talking about! 😂😂 You can’t just use a whole 55-gallon drum of lead paint to stop EMF radiation. Lead was actually added to paint to make it more durable, give it a high gloss, make it more resistant to water, and speed up drying time. But, it was taken out of paint when it was discovered that as the paint wore out over time, the dust and chips from lead paint were causing lead poisoning in adults and permanent neurological and developmental issues in babies, small children, and even unborn babies.
There are paints out there that can block EMFs, they’re often used in microwaves, X-ray machines, and other electrical equipment that are sensitive to EMF interference. These paints are conductive and made of pure silicates, with no toxic chemicals or solvents. So, whoever told you that lead paint blocks electromagnetic energy was either totally wrong or just messing with you.
I’m pretty sure there was lead-based paint in at least one house I know of… just saying.
People are always quick to criticize smart meters but tend to overlook the radiation emitted by their phones every day.
But what if I only feel like having a little bit? Hahaha
Where did you come across this information? Can you tell me the source?
I’m curious, where did you get this information from?
Great post! Make sure to keep your pregnant wife and children at a safe distance.
You might want to consider continuing to use your lead-painted cups and cookware because it’s considered healthy.
Is that a subtle reference to your…. uh . . . your thing?
Hey!
Where did you disappear to?
I still need some answers.
Hey there!
Are you still around?
Let us know where you found this information.
You know what, who even cares about where or what I think? After everything I’ve seen in recent years, I’ve realized I’m not interested in getting into arguments or trying to prove a point on social media. I’ve done some reading on it… it might be accurate, might not be, but honestly, I’m not bothered about what others think or believe 🤷🏻♀️. People will debate about anything and everything.
So you’re the one who mentioned reading something about this and felt compelled to comment here. I’m interested in learning more about the topic, but can’t seem to find any evidence to support your statement. All the sources I’ve come across actually contradict what you claimed.
The spread of false information is concerning. I was hoping you could share your source with me.
Oh man, I’ve definitely referred to people as window lickers before haha
In the past, babies used to chew on window sills. Not all babies, not even those who slept next to a window, but some did. Perhaps that’s where the industry originated from?
Which industry are you referring to? I’m a bit confused by that part of your comment. I live in a 1931 Tudor and have been gradually renovating all windows and doors, while my kids have also played with the window sills. That’s why I decided to remove everything instead of just painting over it.
In the US when lead is found in paint, contractors must bring in a remediation team wearing suits and protective gear, costing thousands of dollars.
I noticed that you changed your comment to lecture us on “Wisdom.”
Could you please share where you got the wisdom that you’re so proud of? What’s your source? Where did you find this information? Help us understand. Try to convince us with some solid evidence.
Do you have a link to the data or article you’re referencing?
If not, then what you’re saying isn’t really “wisdom” but just your personal opinion.
You know, it’s kind of funny to keep demanding answers from someone for 5 whole days when you have access to all the information in the world right at your fingertips. I pointed you in the right direction, so if you want to learn more, do some research on your own. 💁🏽♀️ It’s not up to me to be your teacher.
Oh wow. So you don’t actually have any proof to back up what you’re saying, right?
You’re just making things up as you go along.
I tried to be nice 5 times and give you a chance to prove your point. But unfortunately, all the information out there contradicts what you’re claiming. You’re the one who started this. You’re not helping educate anyone because you can’t.
I’ve asked you five times because the kind of misinformation you’re spreading is really irresponsible and needs to be called out for what it is.
Whoa you really need to calm down on the ❄️
So let’s say I had a link from an official government source to give you, would that determine how smart I am?! How does that work? What does that imply about your intelligence? Any smart person would dig deeper on their own. I don’t have time to spend 5 days later searching for info I already looked into nearly 10 years ago, which most likely has been deleted from the internet since then. And you haven’t exactly been “nice”, you’ve been kinda rude…
I took a closer look. Nothing came up. Searching online is quick. Not a long process. Maybe you were mistaken.
Being overly cautious about things being removed from the internet = Paranoia.
I sometimes wonder why I bother dealing with the mindless folks on the phone 🙃 You can look up anything in seconds. I’m guessing you asked Alexa lol. That’s that. 🫠
If being labeled paranoid by a witty person in denial is the worst I get, I’ll take it. End of story…
Got it, got it. Once again, you’re sticking to your story (quadrupling down(?)) that you’ve got nada and can’t prove any of your wild claims.
Hey, no one with a brain goes around pestering others for answers, unless they enjoy being spoon-fed beliefs. It’s already day 6. Find a hobby…
I’m curious, what happened to your earlier remarks? Did they disappear?
Heading in the same direction as you. Take care!
Unfortunately, it seems that Stephanie is no longer here.
Haha Kevin, looks like I was wrong and she got the upper hand 😂. But hey, I can laugh at myself!
James, I’ve read that too, so I guess it does make sense.
Hey James, I was just thinking about what I read earlier.
Jokes are awesome. I really enjoy a good joke.
Stephanie, on the other hand, seemed very serious and was spreading misinformation as if it were true, without any supporting data. And now all her comments have disappeared.
I’m happy that you’re still around.
Uh oh, ! Maybe you should consider calling Saul so you can take action against the previous homeowners!
There are two topics that are best avoided here: 1. MOLD 2. Lead paint. There seems to be a lot of fear-mongering opinions circulating! If you’re unsure about the safest way to respond to a question, please refrain from commenting. Your lack of knowledge could potentially put someone’s family at risk.
Mentioned that mold can trigger OCD? That’s a new one for me after working in construction for over 20 years.
Mold can lead to neurological problems if you’re around it for a long time. Look up PANS syndrome for more information and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Our provider is more knowledgeable on the subject, but I’ll do my best to help.
It’s heartbreaking to think that there are individuals laughing and making fun of a sick 3-year-old. Unbelievable.
I’m assuming the mold responsible for this illness was tested, . I’m really interested to know the strain that led to this tragedy. Identifying the specific strain could potentially prevent another family from experiencing this.
My son, , also has PANS. It’s not tied to a specific strain, but rather an autoimmune condition that triggers a stronger reaction in the body.
I’m really apologetic. It’s incredibly draining. I literally just finished crying because today has been extremely rough.
Sorry, I just noticed this now for some reason. I’ll have to go through her records to find the specific strain. I just recall that it began with an S. I’m about to head off for a cruise so it might take a while before I can locate it. If the name comes to mind, I’ll circle back.
It’s really disheartening to see people laughing at a sick child. I wish there was something I could do to bring them joy. No one who’s truly happy would find amusement in a child’s illness. If you disagree with illnesses caused by mold, that’s one thing but laughing at a sick child is just bizarre. If you’re feeling down, feel free to message me and I’ll treat you to a coffee or something. 😂
Shared that they had a similar kind of day, but dealing with her profoundly autistic son led to intense violent behaviors. It’s exhausting and she sympathizes with others who had a tough day
Just paint on top of it
Grab a dual action sander and start working. Countless men have painted and scraped this material for a hundred years. You’ll do great.
Wearing PPE and connected the sander to a shop vac. Be careful not to ingest the paint.
Just a heads up, you should never sand dry lead paint. Just a friendly FYI. Even if you’re using a shop vac.
Just a heads up, it’s not recommended to sand dry lead paint. This is important to know, even if you’re using a shop vac.
Go ahead and grab a piece… give it a try. You know you’re curious.
Avoid sanding due to the dust spreading everywhere. Instead, remove the door from its hinges, place it on sawhorses outside, lay down plastic to collect the paint scrapings, and utilize a reliable paint stripper. Wrap up the plastic containing the paint/stripper and dispose of it properly. Alternatively, consider using a low-temperature heat gun or infrared paint stripper (ensure it is low temperature to prevent lead vaporization).
Put a coat of primer and then apply paint
