What is the return policy for major appliances at Home Depot and Lowes for items that are brand new and unused, not damaged or broken?

Has anyone here purchased major appliances from Home Depot or Lowe’s lately for a renovation project? I’m curious about their return policies. I’ve heard Home Depot is pretty strict on returns for major appliances unless there’s some damage. I’m planning on spending about 10k on appliances and want to make sure I’m covered if anything goes wrong. I’ve done some research online but there’s a lot of conflicting information. I’d love to hear from anyone who has recently returned a major appliance to one of these stores. If I buy a brand new appliance and never open or use it, can I still return it in-store, or does it need to be damaged for them to accept the return?

I didn’t shop at hardware stores, but I did buy from Best Buy. Check out their warranty – it’s really good. I pay $189 a year and it covers all the appliances I purchased there, even my TVs. You can also purchase an extension after 5 years to last for 10 years.

I work in IT and can confirm that their warranty is excellent according to my coworkers. I personally know several people who have used their warranty and had their equipment replaced.

I also received discounts by using their credit card. In fact, I essentially got a free TV for purchasing a washer/dryer.
