What is the purpose of the mysterious board attached to the drywall in my living room, and how should I go about removing it for smooth walls?
Hey everyone! I’m currently working on prepping my living room for a fresh coat of paint – got some new drywall for the ceiling and patched up the walls.
In the room, there was this wall-to-wall “mantle” situation with trim and stuff on it left by the previous owner. I’ve taken off the trim and now I’m left scratching my head about the board that’s leftover.
One side of the ceiling has exposed drywall and the edge of the board doesn’t seem to be attached to anything. It’s a bit puzzling because it doesn’t seem to serve any obvious purpose, but it’s securely in place somehow – I just can’t figure out how.
Do any of you have any ideas about what this is? And any suggestions on how to go about removing it to make the walls nice and smooth? Should I cut it flush with the drywall or try something else?
The bottom wall has a wider view than the upper portion.
The wood is likely only 1/2″ below the sheetrock, so remove the wood. Replace it with sheetrock tape mud. It will still create a lip
