What is the most effective method for painting trim without causing disruptions to the carpet, or would it be preferable to replace it with quarter round trim?

Do you have any ideas on how to paint this trim without getting paint on the carpet? Or do you think it would be easier to just replace the trim/quarter round instead?
Usually, quarter round doesn’t go along with carpet. To paint it effectively, consider using a shield or applying tape with care.
I prefer using a 24” putty knife to keep the carpet in place
Try using tape and a putty knife to gently nudge it under the quarter round. Zibra offers a triangular brush that can be quite useful.
If needed, you can insert a strong piece of cardboard between the quarter round trim and the carpet while painting. It is odd to see quarter round in that area.
Use tape to secure the baseboard and carpet before applying paint. Let it dry before removing the tape.
For an easy removal, use a putty knife to tuck it between the woodwork and carpet.
– thank you for sharing, this is a fantastic idea!
Also does a great job with the steps
You actually don’t need shoe moulding when you have carpet.
Gently lift the carpet like others recommended. There might be wood flooring underneath, hence the presence of quarter round trim.
Grab a wide drywall taping knife and carefully slide it under the trim as you move along
Here’s an easy method from on how to tackle this task!
Visit the dollar store to pick up Bristol board or cut computer paper into strips. Once you paint the trim, remove the paper strips before it dries.
Painters tape is so convenient
When I painted my floors, I found it helpful to use one of these tools to help flatten the carpet while working.
Getting replacements can cost a lot. To save money, try using a 12″ or 18″ mudding tool as a barrier to protect the carpet.
People talked about the shields but they can be a hassle to adjust. We usually slide some tape underneath and use a putty knife to secure them in place. Then we lay down a 12” brown paper on top to keep the carpet safe.
To start, tidy up the carpet by trimming any loose bits and tucking it into the strip. Next, use yellow 3m tape which has good stickiness. Make sure to tuck the tape into the carpet.
Make sure to clean with a Scotchbright pad and dry with a towel. Cover the top, then slide a 14-inch drywall knife between the carpet and the corner round. Be careful not to get paint on the masking tape or drywall knife.
The quarter round should have been removed before installing the carpet. Sorry about that, and good luck.
I would take out the quarter round and not put anything in its place (if it’s in good condition).
Remove the 1/4 round and paint it while sitting on a bench. Then put it back in place.
Your most reliable companion when dealing with carpet edges is undoubtedly painters tape. Simply press it down along the carpet and you’re all set.
If you’re looking to tuck painters tape beneath the quarter round, consider using a mudding tool or spatula for better results. Opt for wider tape, let the paint dry until it’s tacky to the touch (but no longer than 24 hours) to ensure easy removal from the trim. Then simply pull it out and you’re good to go.
Why not give blue painters tape a try when securing the carpet in place? Use a small 1/2 brush and remember not to apply too much paint all at once.
Did you know there are hardwood floors under that carpet?
Painter’s tape is essential for clean lines while painting
I like to utilize these tools when painting. They easily fit under the trim. Begin by painting the trim, then remove the edger. Wipe down the edger and continue this process along the trim
Before you start painting, make sure to caulk first.
When you’re painting, try sliding a plastic sheet between the carpet and trim. Just remember to score the paint with a knife before taking off the plastic.
Is there a reason to even bother with quarter round?
I opted for drop plastic and a plastic shower curtain from Dollar Tree along with a putty knife. It worked perfectly.
Using 2″ masking tape along the edge should solve the problem.
What my son did was lay down 2 inches of masking tape and then used a scraper to tuck half of the tape under the baseboard. Once the paint was dry, he simply lifted up the masking tape that was on the carpet.
You can try sliding a paint edger underneath it or even carefully placing tape underneath to paint along the edges.
Just go ahead and paint the carpet before you decide to pull it up – the paint will actually make it easier to remove.
