What is the best way to adhere natural stone veneer to a painted surface without damaging wood floors or causing a mess?
I’ve had my house for about 20 years now and it has this big fireplace that stretches from the kitchen to the living room and even down to the basement, although it’s just painted cinderblock down there. The previous owner painted over the original tan brick in the living room with what looks like latex paint. I’ve had a stash of about 200 boxes of natural stone veneer in a “jigsaw style” down in the basement for over 3 years and I really need to get moving on finally installing it.
I’m hoping to find the simplest, least stressful way to adhere the veneer. I definitely don’t want to deal with stripping or sanding off the paint because it seems like a messy job and I don’t want to risk damaging the wood floors. I’ve been thinking about using Durock or Hardie Backer board with masonry screws to cover the painted surface since I’m not sure if mortar applied with a trowel would stick to the paint. It would be great if I could just use construction adhesive on the back of each piece and stick it on, but I’m not sure if that would work on a painted surface either. What do you think would be the best option for me here
There are special primers you can use for thinset. If you apply one of them on the brick, you’ll be able to apply the thinset directly onto the brick.
You can choose between or metal lathe 😉
Try applying a scratch coat over it.
For the best results, consider using Hardie backer with tapcons.
