What is the best temporary fix for water damage on bathroom drywall until I can afford repairs – grout, caulk, or bleach?

So, we have a bit of a situation in one of our bathrooms – there’s some soft, wet drywall at the bottom of the wall, right at the front. I think it’s because of a crack in the grout that I just spotted. I’m guessing the water damage has spread to the entire threshold from there. The threshold is also cracked under the lip. Thankfully, I don’t see any other damage on the other walls. We’re currently in the middle of some home renovations, so I don’t have the money to fix this right away. Any suggestions on what I can do in the meantime? Should I just grout or caulk the crack? Maybe pour some bleach down there first? I’m clueless. And please, be gentle šš»
The shower installation was done incorrectly, leading to water seepage. Based on the tile work, it appears the waterproofing was also done improperly. Unfortunately, there’s no easy fix for this. Replacing the entire shower is the only solution. Installing a plastic pan and surround may not look great but it’s a cost-effective option. Dealing with incompetent contractors and neglectful owners is never fun.
Can you explain how it was done incorrectly?
‘s first giveaway is the tile on top of the curb. Curb tops are never tiled, even with today’s foam and being 100% waterproof. Water will seep through the grout and get under the tile. The curb top always needs to be a solid surface and pitched slightly towards the shower. The tile on the walls is also too high from the floor tile, and the tile on the front of the curb looks terrible. There is missing grout and the cuts were too small for the section. So, based on these mistakes, I can only assume that what I can’t see is mostly incorrect as well.
Most tile installers recommend avoiding grout at the bottom of a shower due to potential cracks from floor movement. Instead, use matching tub caulking. I’m currently renting and facing the same issue. Planning to switch to tan silicone soon. The shower pan should prevent leaks into the floor.
The house was constructed in 1974 and underwent a renovation around 5 years ago. Despite its age, settling can still occur, especially with a slab foundation.
Houses tend to settle over time, especially in areas with clay-rich soil that expands and contracts based on the weather.
