What is the best method for installing a ceiling fan mounting box on 12-inch thick wood, directly or by cutting and installing an outlet box?

What do you think about attaching the ceiling fan mounting box directly to the wood instead of cutting and installing an outlet box? The wood is half an inch thick and level, although the picture was taken at an angle. Thanks for your input!

To ensure safety, use a heavy-duty octagon box for the ceiling fan and make sure to ground it properly

For safety, you should use a special weight-bearing 4″ octagon box for ceiling fans. It needs to be bolted to framing on at least one side according to the instructions. The installation shown in the photo is not legal in Canada

I wouldn’t recommend using just any box for a ceiling fan. They are heavy and can shake, causing them to become loose

When installing a ceiling fan, remember that it needs to be labeled “for ceiling fan use” for safety reasons. This is important for insurance purposes in case of a fire

Make sure to use a fan-rated pancake box when installing. It can be mounted flush on the ceiling while still being covered by the fan canopy
