What is causing the plaster walls to bubble and crack in my fixer upper back entry way, and what cost-effective DIY solutions could I try?

We got our fixer-upper almost three years back and now I’m looking into fixing up my back entryway. Do you have any idea what might have caused the plaster walls to bubble and crack? Could it be the type of paint they used? I’ve gotten quotes for ripping out and replacing, but it’s a bit out of my budget. Any suggestions on DIY fixes would be greatly appreciated.
I’m thinking it might be water damage. Maybe a leak in the roof?
