What do you recommend for fixing a small hole in the roof vent that’s letting in water during heavy rain in Connecticut?

Hey there, hope you’re all good! I’ve got a little issue with the roof vent – there’s a tiny hole that’s letting water in when it rains a lot here in CT. Any suggestions on how to fix it? Check out the picture below. Let me know your thoughts, thanks so much! 🫡

It seems like you definitely need a new roof pipe boot installed. I would recommend bringing in a professional roofer for this job. It’s a small task for them and they have all the tools and expertise needed to seal it up properly.

Hey , I was browsing online and it seems like everyone is using a pipe boot for this.

Hey , using black silicone may be a good option but it’s probably best to replace the flange… it seems like a 4 inch pipe flange.

Gavin Collins

Hey , we were considering using silicone. Let’s see how that works out.

You can use weatherproof polyfoam spray underneath to prevent the silicone from sliding, but silicone will still work.

Thank you, , that’s a great suggestion!

Seems to be a simple pipe boot. Also appears to be an inspection report. Ask the seller to cover the cost. Heck, see if the seller will pay for a new roof.

They were unwilling to make the repairs (even though they were okay with breaking the contract), and my uncle had to move out by a specific date from his apartment.

That hole is not something small. It could be a boot or shingle issue, or even both. Small projects like these can be quite challenging to get help with. I suggest reaching out to a roofer. If you have trouble finding someone, take a walk around your neighborhood to see if there’s any active roofing work going on. Show the supervisor your issue, leave your contact information with a small tip, and they might drop by at the end of the day or project to take a look and possibly fix it on the spot. Offering cash could be helpful, but make sure to get a receipt for the work done for your records. Best of luck to you.

Hey , I appreciate the info, but the lighting might be making the issue look worse than it actually is. It seems to be a small opening. I think getting a new vent boot and having a professional roofer install it would be a good solution.

Hey there, ! This is how my friend gets most of his roofing jobs – just driving around and asking people if they need help with their roofs. The inspector didn’t provide much detail, but it seems like a simple pipe boot repair. You can easily replace the boot or get a repair boot and some tar from a hardware store. Just slip it over the old boot and seal it with tar. I actually did this on my roof recently while waiting for a replacement.

I’d recommend replacing it.. but I’m no expert

It’s a $10 pipe flange….the rubber has lines for different size pipes….this was cut too large…. it’s a 20-minute repair……replace flange or use silicone

Gabriella Bennett

Go ahead and pick up a new vent boot and slide it over…

Everett Cunningham

Get rid of it

I experienced this too, along with a leak. I paid around $250 to have someone change the boots. Definitely a good investment.
