Hey there! I need some advice on how to complete our upstairs attic renovation. Right now, we’re in the process of taking down the paneling and cleaning the floors. I’m a bit unsure about what steps to take next. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
It seems like the floor joists are too small. If permitted, it’s likely that you’ll need to install 2×10 joists.
Shared this insight. Attic floors are not designed to support heavy loads (such as living spaces). In the case of historic homes, they likely have 2×4 joists. That’s what ours has, and our contractor had to reinforce them by adding boards along the existing joints to make them sturdier and able to handle more weight. You will also need to address ceiling ventilation after sealing it up. Additionally, don’t forget to consider safety codes that dictate the size and number of windows required in living areas for fire safety concerns.
Remove all the fiberglass insulation and opt for spray foam instead. Then, the sky’s the limit!
It would be beneficial to consult with a reputable builder as there are many factors to think about: reinforcing the floor joists, using spray foam in between the roof rafters, and potentially adding dormers for windows for safety reasons. It’s also important to ensure that electrical and ductwork are installed properly to prepare the space for its intended use.
Apply spray foam to the roof deck and walls, 2″-3″ in the walls and 3″-4″ on the roof. You’ll really enjoy that space once it’s done. The current glass is not performing well.

When it comes to your floor, you might have to reinforce it from below. It can give a great look without affecting the existing joists. Make sure to install new lights and outlets before applying 2lb. Foam. We have completed similar projects in the past.
