What are some cost-effective alternatives to concrete for covering the gap around my old house to prevent water from getting stuck when it rains?

I recently bought an older house and noticed there is a gap around it. I’m looking for ways to cover it up to prevent water from pooling when it rains. I’d prefer not to use concrete right now due to budget constraints. Any suggestions or ideas on alternative materials would be really helpful.

Ensure the ‘gap’ at the bottom of the wall is addressed – it should not be left exposed to the ground. The exterior layers of the wall should never come in direct contact with the ground, including mulch or plants. Only the foundation should be touching the ground.

I apologize for the confusion, the previous statement should have been that the bottom of exterior walls shouldn’t be near the ground.
