Struggling to remove stick-on brick residue from a wall during remodeling – any special tricks or solutions to get rid of it?

So, we put up some fake brick stick and peel on our son’s bedroom wall, but now we’re remodeling and can’t seem to get the sticky residue off. I’ve tried scraping, using a razor blade, and even sanding, but nothing’s doing the trick. Any advice on what might work to remove it?
You could consider using a heat gun, acetone, or eucalyptus oil separately to see if it helps. It’s worth a shot!
Hey, I’m and I’m open to trying anything at this point 😅. Thanks a lot!
Have you considered using a wallpaper steamer for the heat? By the way, I would also suggest contacting the wallpaper company to see if they have any recommendations.
-Glick, I think your suggestion might be a better option, haha.
The electric sander was ineffective.
If it were me dealing with this problem, I’d skim coat over it…
Heat is the key here!
Hey , do you think I should apply heat first and then wipe with a cloth? Or would scraping with heat work better?
Hey Destiny, not completely sure about this one. I’d suggest using a scrapper before touching a heated surface with just cloth. Have you tried any type of goo remover?
I never did figure out… we switched out the drywall behind the faux brick here when we first moved in
Give cheap tape a shot. Heat it with a blow dryer and peel it off. It’s a bit time-consuming but worth a try. You could also attempt it with contact paper. Apply it, warm it, and pull it off. I’d give it a go, nothing to lose. Just a thought I had.
Smooth out the wall
They have a highly acidic spray cleaner available at Rural King.
Try using a product called “GooGonr”. It should help with that.
You can try using a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol or white vinegar and water to clean it.
Let me know when you find the solution!
You can use a heat gun and scraping to remove most of it, then repeat the process if needed. If there’s still a lot left, try scrubbing with Goo Gone. If it’s not too severe, a light sanding can help even it out.
I had a tough time removing adhesive from a cork board, but eventually found success using a product called Goof Off. It was still quite laborious though.
At least make sure to apply 2 coats of an oil based primer after removing what you can, because glue can damage latex primer and latex paint.
I recommend trying Goo Gone. I used it recently to eliminate wallpaper.
This is expected to be effective, especially in larger quantities.
The Henry brand adhesive remover is amazing for removing adhesive residue on walls. Let me tell you how I found out. 😉
I decided to use peel and stick fake brick on my walls. It looks fantastic, can be painted, and is simple to apply. I ordered it from Amazon in three different sizes: 12×12, 12×16, and 28×30. I opted for the larger panels, and it was surprisingly affordable.
Thanks for the offer but I don’t need the fake brick. I’m actually trying to find solutions to repair my wall after using that fake brick, haha.
Hey , I have peel and stick in several areas, have you tried painting it? I’m worried the paint won’t stick.
Orbital sander with a variety of grits
We recently purchased an older home with multiple layers of wallpaper in the bathrooms. Removing the adhesive was quite a challenge. I found that spraying vinegar on the walls made it easier to scrape off the wallpaper. Running a hot shower and letting the steam build up in the bathroom also helped with the cleaning process.
Removing wallpaper from other walls in the house required a bit more effort. Making sure the walls were moist but not completely wet allowed the wallpaper to fall apart, making it easier to scrape off. This method also worked on sticky residue in the basement. Using a spray bottle, plastic paint scraper, vinegar, and maybe a bottle of wine or a couple of beers to relax helped alleviate the stress of the messy work.
UPDATE: Managed to remove it! Used goo gone gel spray and a scraper. Still a pain, but it’s finally off. Thanks, everyone!
I absolutely love Goo Gone! It works wonders.
