I’m trying to swap out this busted threaded plastic piece on our hose faucet, but it’s really putting up a fight. Any tips on how to tackle this?

Just wanted to say thanks for your advice – I managed to get it off using a small screwdriver.

Turn off the water gently. Remove the stem carefully. Apply some heat to it. The material is plastic inside brass. It should be easy to remove.

Consider using a big knife or chisel to carefully insert it into the plastic and twist it like a screwdriver. You may want to wear gloves just in case things don’t go as planned😅😂 I hope this suggestion helps!

Use a thin screwdriver to gently pry it out without removing the stem. The vacuum breaker is located on top. You can find rebuild kits at Ace Hardware or a plumbing supply store.

Try using an internal pipe wrench to extract it.

Mae Brown

You can use a small hacksaw or a serrated knife. Make a cut below the plastic part and then use pliers to twist it out.

Stick a knife into the material and twist it around. Be careful not to injure yourself in the process

Overlap two screwdrivers and turn them to remove the broken piece. In the worst scenario, the plastic may crack, making it easier to remove.

The simplest method is to grab a pair of channel locks, insert them into the broken piece, and twist it out. It’s more effective if you warm up the channel locks so the plastic conforms to them.

Check out the landscape watering section for a riser extractor tool.
