Hey there, can you lend a hand? I recently purchased a 1950’s ranch style home and I’m looking for advice on the best way to remove the heavy wall texture (we’re also getting rid of the ceiling popcorn). Do you think it’s better to hire a professional for this job?

I think you have plaster walls. You might want to consider skim coating them. Have you checked the popcorn ceiling for asbestos?

Terry May

I totally agree with ‘s point. 👍

Try sanding down the walls and then skim coating them.

Getting rid of popcorn ceilings can be done by using water and scraping, but it can get really messy. Sanding the walls is a ton of work, especially if you’re doing the whole house. You might want to consider finding someone who can skim coat the walls for you. I’ve heard that in certain parts of the country, it can be tricky to find a plasterer who can do skim coating. Interestingly, in the Northeast, most homes don’t have textured walls and ceilings, as it can actually lower the value of your home.

Hey, just a heads up – if the house was constructed prior to 1980, it might be best to steer clear of DIY popcorn ceiling removal since it could potentially have asbestos.

Harry Jensen

Keep in mind that the 1950s popcorn ceilings likely have asbestos. It’s best to leave this job to professionals.
