Hey everyone, I’m in the process of swapping out the power outlets in my house. I have 20 amp fuses, but I’ve noticed that the current outlets on those circuits are only rated for 15 amps. Do you think I should switch them out for 20 amp outlets instead?
Actually, it’s safe to utilize 15 amp outlets on a 20 amp circuit.
That’s fine. Are you using 110 volts or 220 volts?
Negative.
Are you talking about fuses?
The wire size is a determining factor.
Concerned about fuses? I recommend having that panel changed by a professional. They will also ensure the right breakers are installed for each circuit. In the past, people would use fuses that didn’t trip properly. Some of your 20amp circuits might need to be changed to 15amp. It’s surprising your insurance company hasn’t required you to update the panel, as it’s illegal in many areas.
15 is fine as long as all the receptacles are doubled. If it’s a single receptacle, it should be 20a.
If you’re unsure, it’s best to contact an electrician. Just know that 15amp outlets are acceptable on a 20amp circuit with two outlets on one yoke. Single outlets should be 20amp. By the way, I am an electrician.
