Should I sand the beams before repainting them in a rustic brown color, or can I just apply primer and paint directly?

I’m thinking about repainting the beams in my house a rustic brown. Should I sand them first, or can I just go ahead and add primer followed by the paint? Any advice would be appreciated.
If the beams are already painted, there’s no need to sand or prime them. Just make sure to use the right type of paint – whether it’s oil-based or water-based.
How can I determine ‘s status?
For a quick test, suggests using a little mineral spirit on a rag to wipe the beam. If the color comes off or feels tacky, it’s water-based. If it remains smooth, it’s oil-based. You can prime it with an oil-based primer and then use a latex finish paint as well.
It’s always a good idea to lightly sand, especially when trying to cover something up.
Do you know if it’s been painted or stained before? Sanding may not be needed for this type of item. If unsure, it’s best to use an oil or shellac primer followed by a good quality paint.
