Should I refund the homeowner who paid $3k for the work if I am unable to obtain a permit due to a potential violation?

So, I originally charged 3k for this job, but now the homeowner is asking for a permit. The issue is, I can’t actually get one. Any guesses on what the violation might be? Do you think I should refund the money?

Make sure you can open the panel to at least 90 degrees

Chloe Edwards

Just make sure you have 3 feet of space to work in.

Paige Williamson

You’re the best! 🙌🏼

Rogerio Ozuna

If you’re silly enough to place a panel there, then yes, you should either get a refund or relocate it. Can you turn it around to face the opposite direction?

Stephanie Perkins

Just put in a new tank. At some point, an inspector had to approve that tank before it could go there in the first place. Sometimes there’s limited space and the water level isn’t above the panel. The panel can still be opened. It’s a tough decision.

Taylor Gonzalez

I would expect the panel to be there before the HWT, otherwise OP must be not very smart

Paige Jackson

Both of these statements apply.

Gonzalo Dueñas

What was the thought process behind installing the panel in that location?

Johnni Gonzales

There is a water heater blocking it

Felix Lavoie

Relocate the water heater, ensuring required panel clearances, sufficient combustion air, obtaining the permit and passing inspection.

Christopher Kuhn

Just a heads up about this particular task

Rebecca Willis

You’re all set. Did you make sure to use a different name? Swap the SIM card to a new phone. It’s the usual procedure.

Carolyn Gibson

You might need to get a new simcard; the phone should be working fine after that. 😛 And Saul oodman would make a great attorney for that case too.

Claudio Henríquez

Having the water heater in front of the panel is a major problem

Stephanie Perkins

I think the code mentions that water lines can’t be directly above or in front of an electric panel. And if the panel and tank were already there, what more can the plumber do?

Claudio Henríquez

Ervace, if someone added that panel later, the responsibility is on them, not the plumber.

Stephanie Perkins

We really need to know the whole situation to figure out what the actual problem is.

Melinda Johnston

You charge 3k and can’t even install a trim plate on the switch for him?

Camilo Rocha

The electrical switch is missing a cover plate, but it’s an easy fix.

Aaron Bryant

Integrity means doing the right thing even without a permit, which is rare nowadays

Caridad Ocasio

You’re absolutely right! Work should always follow the building code, regardless of permits.

Aaron Bryant

Has no shame. The $3000 was nice, but the quality of work was lacking.

Caridad Ocasio

Is in agreement.

reat, I’ll get started on that right away.

Danielle Nelson

It’s too near the electric panel.

Liam Garrett

Why do you think it’s a good idea to put a tank in that spot?

Marianne Bouchard

This violates the working space code.

Marianne Bouchard

Wasn’t dealing with the water heater obstructing the way a huge hassle?

Mason Barnaby

That’s the issue with taking on side jobs without honesty. Some people will always try to cheat

Tracy Steward

Any reason why you can’t request a retroactive permit? Did you do everything correctly? They might complain, but as long as it’s done right, they won’t reject it… just remember to stay at least 3 feet away from the panel.

Mitzy Orosco

That’s hilarious 😄 you would expect it to be electric at least 😂

Ellen Coleman

Which came first, the water heater or panel? 😆 I recommend upgrading to a tankless water heater mounted on the far wall. Do you already own a used Rheem tank? If the tank was there first, it must have been a pain terminating the wires.

David Bailey

If he doesn’t move the water heater, it won’t pass inspection, that’s his responsibility

Aaron Bryant

I’m not so sure about that, .

Lester King

One hundred and ten dollars and twenty-six cents

Nick Marshall

Make sure to put a cover plate on that switch.

Wyatt Dixon

What even is this, Jesus??

Brett Palmer

Hey, are you actually an electrician? I checked out your profile and didn’t really see much related to electrical work…

Héctor Delgado

The real question is, what is good about it?

Héctor Pineda

If you placed the panel with the water heater in place, then that responsibility falls on you. If the water heater was installed afterwards, advise them to relocate it.

Ramiro Villa

Here are 3 issues to consider: 1. Insufficient clearance around the panel. 2. Lack of a disconnect for the water heater. 3. Missing cover for the light switch.

Adam Park

There’s no way to disconnect, that’s dangerous!!!!

Molly Jordan

I bet there is no way to disconnect because the circuit breaker is obviously visible near it 😂

Stephanie Perkins

What happens if that’s where the tank was originally placed before he switched it?

Daryl Adams

Relocate the water heater

Freddie Lucas

It’s too near those water lines

Salvador Brooks

Desk area with a skull emoji

Miguel Ángel Sotelo

Three feet

Marilou Chan

You should consider getting a refund

Rene Simpson

Why not just relocate the water heater? It’s a much simpler solution.

Arthur Walker

Return every penny, you should have been more cautious.

Vicki Wagner

Why would anyone attempt this in the first place? Only someone unqualified would make such a mistake if the water heater was already installed. It’s best to refund the money and steer clear of electrical work!

Rodney Pierce

Moving the water heater shouldn’t be too difficult!

Alexis Ouellet

No content

Emilie Ambrose

I’ve come across this before. 🤷. Panel on top of a water heater.

Kate Gilbert

Remove it and let it be.

Daniel Thompson

The panel needs to be at least 3 to 6 feet away from the hot water heater.

Grimaldo Olivares

Selling the house in its current condition would not be possible without addressing potential code violations.

Leanne Ross

Simply move the tank…

Marvin Campbell

It would have been better to have a conversation with the customer and explain the situation regarding the permit beforehand to manage expectations.

Ellie Beck

Was it already there, and where is the vent supposed to go? Could it be relocated 3ft?

Cameron Little

I’m curious if that water heater was already installed before you put in that panel???

Mateo Lemus

Not genuine

Janice Jennings

I assume the panel was placed after the water heater?? Having a 3ft workspace is taught early on in training, or it should be. If that’s the case, then it’s entirely your fault and you must find a solution. If the water heater was installed after the panel, you need evidence of dates and then the plumber is accountable for relocating it.
