Should I be concerned about cracks in the rafters and boards of my roof, and if so, should I remove and replace them or brace them for support?
Hey there,
I noticed a crack in the wall and wanted to get your opinion on whether it’s something to worry about. The boards above it are the rafters for the roof, and there are also some minor cracks on the boards below, in a horizontal pattern like in the photo. The 2×4 below goes down and is nailed to the joist. It’s a bit tricky to take a good photo because it’s squeezed in between the water heater and furnace.
The house had foundation repair done back in 2016, and it was checked recently for a different issue. The person who looked at it said the foundation seems to be in good shape. The crack in the photo appeared during the really dry and hot summer we just had here in Houston.
If this crack is a problem, should I remove and replace the affected area? Would any bracing be necessary if I take it out? Or should I just add another board alongside it? Just wanted to get your thoughts on how to handle it.
Sister it up with a board that has the same width and you’ll be good to go. Wood tends to crack as it dries and ages.
I was considering that, , but since all the cracking is below the nails and mainly on the overhang, does it make a difference? 🤷🏽
