Should I attempt to fill this hole with multiple layers of plaster patch, or is it best to hire professionals for the job?

Would it be better to fill this hole/area with several thin layers of plaster patch or should we consider hiring professionals to do it?

Plaster mud is effective. I actually did a similar repair recently. It’s like spreading drywall mud.

Ready mix plaster

I’m not quite sure where you’re based, but I would fill it with Durabond first, then apply compound on top and sand it until smooth.

Definitely apply thin layers at a time for best results. I was able to refinish a room that was full of holes (lath and plaster). Just clean it up, remove any loose debris, vacuum the area, and proceed with layering.

I personally had good results using mortar cement. The key to achieving a smooth finish is using a wet trowel.

Remove all the trim, strip and align, then cover the entire wall with 1/4” sheetrock for a much easier and cleaner final look.

I’d patch it up with a cement-based material and finish it with plaster on top.
