Should I apply Kilz before skim coating the drywall to cover up any nicks from removing loose paint?

Alright, so now that I’ve removed all the loose paint, I noticed a few small nicks in the drywall. Should I go ahead and apply some Kilz first before doing a skim coat?

You’re doing great. Begin by applying Kilz to seal any stains and create a consistent surface. Then, proceed with the skim coat to even out the areas where the drywall was damaged. This method will provide a smooth surface for painting.

I’ve been skimming, coating, and priming since the 90s. Nothing has ever gone wrong. Just remember not to roll too much, or the skim coat might end up on the roller. Just stick to 5 rolls and avoid going back.

Absolutely, it’s important to prime any exposed drywall or nicks before applying a skim coat

Gently sand to remove any loose paper. Make sure to use an oil-based primer to seal it. Once it dries, sand again and apply multiple skim coats
