Looking for advice on removing lead-based paint from ship lap walls – any tips?

So, my client is really keen on keeping this ship lap wall, but it’s got that pesky lead-based paint on it again. I tried using Klean Strip to get rid of it, but no luck. Any suggestions on how to tackle this paint removal challenge would be greatly appreciated!

Put on your mask and let’s get to it.

Here’s the plan for my home with cyprus shingle siding: gently scrape away anything loose and then paint over the rest.

For the exterior, make sure to wear the best mask or respirator you can find and use a heat gun. Unsure about how to remove paint from the reveal – maybe try a specialized draw scraper or chisel.

Heather Crawford

Make sure to use a respirator and a propane torch with a fan blade. And double-check that you have the correct filters for lead.

So they probably prefer it stained, or else you’d just paint on top of it, right?

Brent Coleman

You know, I had the same idea. Maybe we should encapsulate it instead. Seems like they’re looking for a stained finish

When dealing with lead-based paint, opt for a paint stripper that does not contain methylene chloride. Methylene chloride can react with lead to create a toxic gas

Shylaja Kamath

The Metabo stripper is a professional choice.

Kaya Evliyaoğlu

Carbide scraper.

Has the ability to make things airborne.

Opts for wearing a respirator when working with big pieces. As a painting contractor for over 40 years, I recommend using a mechanical carbide scraper or a chemical stripper. However, using a chemical stripper indoors is not ideal. Another option is hand scraping with the type of scraper mentioned above. Just cover the area with plastic and tent off if you’re concerned. Many people are overly paranoid about Hazmat. Common sense is crucial. It takes a significant exposure to get poisoned. Personally, I have never been poisoned.

You can purchase a paint stripper from Sherman Williams that is applied by spraying and can be washed off with a power washer. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully. To catch any loose paint that comes off, lay down cloth on the ground and dispose of it properly. You may need to repeat the process, but it is effective. Start by power washing to remove loose paint

Yeah, this method actually works. Just cover it up with some thin painters plastic and leave it for a while. 👍👍👍👍

Oh, like the Peel Away brand?

Aline Küsters

Nope, it’s not the same. It’s supposed to be washed off with power.

Brijesh Anchan

Try using a heat gun instead

Peel Away might be worth a shot, it’s a popular brand. You leave it on overnight, or as the directions suggest. It works really well and seals in lead paint.

Gustavo Angulo

Peel Away was effective for us too.

Tell them to stop licking the wall and just paint over it. The whole lead paint and asbestos issue is no joke. As long as you don’t disturb them, you should be fine. Simply being in the presence of these materials won’t give you cancer overnight. However, you are at a higher risk if you cook on a stove without proper ventilation or do a lot of grilling. Consider using a hepa dust collector for dander.

Marcus Ramirez

Just paint over it and move forward

Auguste Brun

It might be best to move on from this job and search for new opportunities.
