Is there a standard gap between stair treads and drywall, or should there be a skirt board or trim for a proper installation?

Do you know what the usual space is between a stair tread and drywall? I have a feeling it’s not quite right in my case, especially since there isn’t any skirt board or trim.

You shouldn’t see a gap unless there’s a trim piece being installed.

If you’re not planning on adding any trim, go ahead and caulk it. It’s common for things to not be perfectly square when working with wood, so there might be a little difference between the stairs and the wall.

Seems like it was made with American workmanship. 🇺🇸🦅💪

Invest in a stair tread tool to cut your stairs perfectly, no need for trim or caulk afterwards.

You should consider adding a Skirt board, it’s best to have it installed beforehand, but it can also be installed later on.

Brent Coleman

Just make sure to do this! If not, the drywall might end up getting damaged. The skirt board should be installed after the treads to cover any gaps. It’s definitely a challenging project, so it’s best to hire a skilled carpenter.

Stringer trim is usually present.

María Lorenzo

Are you a fan of skirt boards?

Bror Risberg

Drywall is in good shape. Skirt boards were never a feature in my house or my parents’. They seem a bit outdated, especially if made of MDF.

Mackenzie Taylor

Which season would be best for this project? 🤔

Célian Blanchard

I typically leave a 1/16-1/8 gap to ensure consistent spacing and prevent squeaks from wood expansion.

Diego Archuleta

I totally agree with

Lincoln Moore

To improve the look, I would recommend adding a finish stringer/skirt board to cover any gaps. It will definitely enhance the overall appearance.

Mercedes Romero

I think I accidentally did that to my staircase. Whoops!

Mohamed Marín

Make sure to create room for expansion / retraction. Your trim will hide it.

Rafael Welch

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t respond to this question!!🤣🤣

Lylou Carpentier

Seems fine. When it’s too snug, it’ll make an awful squeaking noise.

For a floating floor like that, make sure to use 1/4″ spacers to prevent buckling.

Is not currently on the stairs

This item can be found in stock at the store.

Quarter round should be nailed to the wall, not the floor, to allow the floating floor to move freely.
