Is there a spacer or alternative solution to bridge the gap between my ceiling fan bracket and the metal outlet box that extends 12 inches past the ceiling?

I’m putting in a new ceiling fan, but I’m having a bit of an issue. The metal outlet box sticks out about half an inch from the ceiling, so when I attach the fan bracket, it ends up sitting half an inch below the ceiling. Do you know of any spacers or solutions I could use to fill that gap? I’ve considered ceiling medallions, but I don’t think they’ll do the trick.
Looks like you’ll need to swap the box for an old work ceiling fan box
There’s a pretty good chance that box isn’t actually rated for a fan.
I suggest replacing that box with one specifically designed for a ceiling fan. These boxes typically have arms that extend and attach to the ceiling joists to ensure proper support. Rest assured, they can be installed without enlarging the hole in your ceiling. If your current box is not rated for fan weight, you might regret it in the future.
Do you have a photo?
Hey, don’t forget to put the cover on so the box is hidden. It’s really not a major issue.
Maybe I didn’t explain it clearly. The boxes droop, causing the fan cover to naturally adjust to the droop and rest flat against the ceiling.
Do you know if this box is approved for ceiling fans? Can you send a pic?
You should consider buying a new box. Make sure the new one is labeled ‘for ceiling fan use’ according to the electrical code book.
If you’re feeling crafty, you could create your own medallion by using a hole saw (or jigsaw in a pinch) to cut a hole slightly larger than the box. Secure it with longer screws to your existing box if it’s fan-rated, or attach it to any joists using weight-bearing lags and then attach the fan. Finally, paint everything to match the ceiling. Hey , I just posted something similar…haha…you don’t have to secure the medallion because the fan’s top cover will keep it in place.
Consider using a 1/2″ thick medallion that is similar to this one.
The fan is sure to enjoy the extra space to breathe, allowing the motor heat to escape properly.
Thanks to all!
