Is skim coating the best method for fixing imperfections before painting a bathroom for a first-timer like myself?

Hey there! I’m thinking about fixing up some flaws in my bathroom before I paint. Would skim coating be the best option for this? I’ve seen some examples but I’m new to all this, so any simplified advice would be great! 😅
Do you know if that’s Sheetrock or cement board?
I don’t have a clue… Why does it even matter?
Yeah, I’ve come across that here. It’s everywhere.
Use a 32-inch skim blade for skim coating
I recommend using durabond in a bag instead of the premixed stuff.
How about adding 3? Durabond easy sand is fantastic, but slightly trickier to sand compared to plus 3. Also, you don’t have to mix it as frequently as durabond.
The pre-packaged material is significantly more durable.
Yeah, but it can be more challenging for beginners to work with.
Here. I really like it too. Check out this faux marble column I constructed using durabond. It’s half an inch thick with 1/4″ grooves and it’s been standing strong for 5 years with no cracks.
Hey there, here. I spent 45 years working as a contractor, with 20 of those years specifically as a drywaller. I completely agree with you about setting all corner beads in the green bag hard sand durabond. When it came to plaster repair, I always used durabond green. Great work!
Looking to achieve smooth walls?
Start by applying a quality bonding primer like Stix. Prime the walls.
Smooth out the walls with skim coating and sanding. Prime again, then apply 2 coats of finish.
Hey , thanks for sharing! Can you tell me what finish you used?
Could you please share the color of your topcoat? Also, what did you use as a wall paint?
It’s actually easier to just redo the texture of the entire room if you want everything to have a consistent look… making everything flat is more challenging
Thanks a lot! I’m definitely trying to take the easiest route possible 😅
Have you tried looking up various textures on Google to find one that you find easy to work with?
In my opinion, adding texture to a bathroom might not be the best idea. You could consider skim coating it, but take your time with it. It’s best to apply multiple thin layers until you achieve the desired smoothness. For instance, I smoothed the walls in my bathroom except for one. On that particular wall, I focused on smoothing out the imperfections but left some for a bit of “character” since it’s an old house and I wasn’t aiming for perfection.

If you’ve never worked with drywall before, you might want to get some help to make it look good. Even a professional would have a hard time with it.
I appreciate the help!
After taking down the wallpaper in my bathroom, I discovered a lot of damage that needed refinishing. While professionals were working on finishing other areas of my house, one of them taught me how to do finishing work. I decided to give it a shot and ended up needing more sanding than the professional work, but I was pleased with the results. Adding texture with knockdown spray made a difference. I plan to tackle other walls when I have the time.
Thank you so much for your help!
