Is my current carpet underlay suitable for laminated flooring, or should I purchase a specific type for proper installation?

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has experience with installing laminated interlocking flooring in a lounge? I know you usually need underlay before laying down any type of flooring. Right now I have carpet, and I’m not sure if the current underlay will work for laminate flooring.
I’ve heard it needs to be between 3mm and 5mm thick, but I’m unsure if the current underlay fits the bill or if I’ll need to get new underlay altogether. My carpets are on the thicker side, not thin ones.
Thanks so much! 😊
Save yourself some hassle and get the laminate flooring that already comes with underlayment attached. I went with that option for plank flooring and it turned out great.
Hmm, that appears to be carpet padding. Foam underlayment for laminate is typically thin and comes in rolls. You should remove all of that, take out any staples, secure loose nails/screws, make sure the floor is mostly flat, and fix any uneven areas.
Similar to this with potential variations in color and thickness

Thank you for the thorough response! Much obliged
Actually, using carpet underlayment can damage your new flooring.
Avoid using carpet padding. Is this on a slab? If moisture is a concern, make sure to use a vapor barrier underlayment.
