Is it safe to use a 15x25x1 filter with tape to cover the extra space in a Trane XB furnace if the 16x25x1 is too tall, and can I switch to an 11 MERV filter without damaging the furnace’s whole house ventilation control?

I bought a 16x25x1 filter, but it’s too tall for the lid. Would it be okay to use a 15x25x1 filter instead, or should I try using the taller ones and just tape them down? Also, I’ve been using an 11 merv filter for the past year, changing it every 3 months. I’m not sure if this is too hard on the furnace since I didn’t purchase it and don’t have the manual. It’s a Trane XB model and there’s a whole house ventilation control. I’m not sure if that means I can use a higher merv filter or not. Thanks for any help you can provide!
My furnace is the same size and fits snugly. I usually have to trim about a quarter inch to get it started. The HVAC guy mentioned that they are intentionally built snug to prevent air leaks. I decided to use a high MERV filter and was advised by HVAC to stick to the blue filter with a MERV 2 rating as the higher-rated ones might restrict airflow through the system. I replace it monthly. Good luck!
There’s a lot of space there, maybe try to modify it to accommodate a 4” or 5” filter. You’ll notice a significant increase in airflow compared to using a 1” filter. Using a MERV 11 with a 1” filter is pushing it, I would recommend changing it at least monthly.
Having issues with MERV 11 filters? I’ve been using MERV 13 for years without any problems. Started in a 12-year-old mid-efficiency furnace, now in a new high-efficiency unit. I usually change it every 3 months, but considering how dirty it got in my new house, I might switch to every 2 months.
Hey , as far as I know, it’s not causing any issues.
Hey , the performance of your unit relies on the pressure drop. Using the wrong efficiency filter could result in the motor failing prematurely.
I use MERV 8 filters and replace them every month.
I always make sure to order the correct size. To ensure all the air goes through the filter and not around it, I tape the edges with blue painters tape.
When ordering on Amazon, make sure to get the right size. Local stores don’t have my size in stock, so I have to be specific with my order. It’s better to prevent dirt from getting in around the sides by using the correct size and a higher merv rating.
