I think it is important to prioritize taking care of yourself before trying to help others. It’s like the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Remember to put your own oxygen mask on first before assisting others.
The manufacturer’s specifications now recommend simply cutting it off. It’s not the old way, but that’s the right method today.
I understand that. And it’s also important to use the appropriate connectors. Set screws won’t suffice
I’m smoothing out that sharp corner with my wire cutters because I’m resourceful.
Try using the cutters in a different direction.
That’s completely wrong.
Those things are terrible, one of them actually cut into the wire. I’ll stick with the Diagonal cutters.
Jerrid Macald going for the classic choice haha.. those are better suited for old steel bx, not Mc cable
Jerrid Macald make sure to adjust the depth based on the MC you’re using. Not all sheaths will fit the same.
By the time all that’s done, might as well have used Diagonal cutters, right?
Jerrid Macald that’s an interesting perspective. If you take just 10 seconds to set up your MC stripper once per job, you ensure a safe way to strip the sheath throughout the entire job. Personally, I have no issue with either method, but having worked in commercial projects for 15 years, I’ve seen apprentices do much better with the MC stripping tool
I was referring to personal use. I see your point if we’re talking about apprentices. But in my experience, apprentices struggle more with crushing connectors
Jerrid Macald yeah, who wants to lug those around, right? They don’t even fit well in your tool belt, taking up so much space
Jerrid Macald hey there! The tool actually has a depth setting to avoid damaging any wires. You just gotta know how to use it properly
On hey, just a heads up – make sure your blade depth is set correctly. But hey, if you prefer not to use one, regular old tin snips work really well
I’ve never seen an MC cable like that. Is the bare ground there just to improve grounding for the sheathing?
This is a hospital grade mc cable.
That’s not MC cable, actually. It’s either BX or AC cable, which is similar but has some differences.
Isolated ground mc cable.
This type of cable is known as Health Care MC cable, meeting the requirements of 517.13 (A) and (B). Unfortunately, the installation was incorrect – it should be cut off as twisting it violates the product listing.
The isolated ground mc ground is identifiable by a yellow band and is not bare, unlike the usual green ground.
Hey, do you know why there’s bare ground? The wire is wrapped in a plastic sheet to prevent contact with the outer metal when cut.
The purpose of the exposed aluminum is to connect with the corrugated aluminum metal tape. That’s why you trim it off. It has already served its purpose.
The aluminum wire is exposed outside of the plastic covering.
Oh, I didn’t realize it was on the outside of the plastic. That’s what confused me.
Fun fact – named after the Bronx (BX) where it was created for the pesky NYC rats that chew on electrical wires. While BX wire uses the metal sheath as the ground, the one in the video actually has a separate ground wire.
Hey, they make a similar type of MC cable that only contains a black, white, and bare aluminum wire. The white wire needs to be labeled to show that the sheath is the ground.
Hey, gotcha! It’s all trash and should be piped. This type of cable is for mistakes and lightning strikes haha
I’ve never seen MC with a bare wire like that. All the grounding is connected to the pigtail in the box. In the past, metal conduit was used for grounding. A pigtail to the device was all that was needed. But that was 15 years ago, and the code has changed for the better here in California, haha.
It’s commonly used in medical facilities.
It’s medical-grade MC. It just has an extra ground in it.
Rotary splitter. I would outperform this guy in roughing walls. And if you’re tying knots with the plastic in your MC cable, you’re being silly.
Why is it so slow??? I could have finished 50 times over by now, all the way across the building and around the corner. What the heck!
That’s HCF MCI-A cable – you should just bend it over and cut it off. The traditional hospital grade is wrapped differently.
Cut it off evenly.
‘s side cutters work more quickly.
💯
Tattoos are pretty cool though…
You have the choice to either cut it off and leave it or twist it around like you’re doing. This MC is specifically for medical facilities.
Focused on patient care areas.
Accurate
Just a suggestion – instead of cutting out the plastic shielding sleeve, how about folding it down over the red grommet and then wrapping the wire and sleeve over the plastic so it holds itself in place while you move on to the next step.
Instead of wrapping the bond too much around the MC, try laying it an inch or so beside and cutting it off.
Incorrect
Trim it evenly
Can you provide a reference?
I spoke to the sales representative as soon as it was released. Probably before you entered the industry.
The instructions are included with
EVERY SINLE roll you purchase!
Red Devils are unnecessary as well
I’ve been working in this industry since 1980, how about you?
Read and follow the instructions. Trim the wire even and dispose of the red wire where it belongs. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey ! Head back up to the top of the comments. I provided you with 3 references and a video that will cover all the different types and methods.
Actually, the instructions say to bend it back “about 120 degrees” (I have no idea why it’s not 180) and then cut it.
I can’t believe how useless that tool is 😭
What is this fool even thinking?
Unnecessarily complicating a straightforward task. Just cut the bond at the end of the sheath, discard the excess material, and insert the wire into the fitting. Easy as that.
Give him a break, he struggles to read beyond a second-grade level
I’m grateful for all the tattoos though…
What’s interesting is that the instructions tell you to cut the aluminum ground, but I’ve always been told to wrap it around instead.
Hey, here! So, the old wire had a smaller strand, but with the new wire you can just fold it back 180 degrees and cut it.
What a nice collection of rings, you silly person.
Wow.🙄 Another thing I haven’t seen before.

Received the AC cable. Is it for medical use?
Yeah, that wire serves as an additional ground.
Yeah, I’m working on a dentist’s office. Same situation.
No, it’s not extra. It serves a different purpose (to ground the jacket rather than the circuit). Supplemental implies an added layer of security for the same purpose and it is definitely not the same purpose.
Sorry about that, yeah, it’s for bonding the jacket.
Null
What if it’s not a receptacle in a 1900 box? What if it’s a switch in a single gang old work box, or a 1900 with a raised mulberry cover?
Seems like a #10 aluminum conductor, serving as a bonding conductor for the aluminum jacket.
Can you believe an electrician wearing several rings at once?
Hamilton is known for having ‘ha ha’ tattooed all over his hand
Seriously, are we really going to shame someone for using a roto splitter? Insecure much that we can’t cut MC properly and efficiently? There’s nothing slow about roto splits. The person in the video may be moving a bit slow, I’ll give you that.
Besides being slower and creating more sharp edges instead of preventing them. This product aims to replace skill with convenience, but it’s not as effective as mastering the skill.
That’s quite possibly the worst take I’ve heard recently.
Trim it down flush, make sure to use the right connector, and avoid Red Devils. I’ve had this conversation over 300 times. I even attended a product introduction for it and had a lengthy chat with the rep. It’s not difficult, and honestly, if you can read, the directions are on every reel you buy.
Tim Bright, that’s a new one for me 🤔
Man with the hack saw. It’s been 55 years, old habits are hard to break.
That anti-short device really messed you up!!

Man, he really needs to clean that stuff off his fingers before he gets in trouble or gets shocked…seriously, with all his fancy moves?
Constantly criticizing your coworkers is not cool
That’s incorrect

Wow, it took you like forever to remove some insulation and install an antishort in it. Come on, be gentle with it, man.
The plastic totally threw me off, but it’s still the best tool ever created
What on earth was that?
Just say no to drugs, it’s that simple.
Sorry down the line, munching on those rings won’t be so great.
Everyone has their own method. It doesn’t matter as long as the work is done right. You young ones think your way is the only way. et over yourselves.
Incorrect. Even in the right situation that tool is meant for apprentices so they don’t mess up. My dad made me use them until I was 14. After that, he tossed it over the fence. One of the tools that clearly marks a rookie on any jobsite.
FFS
Round is isolated
Obstructed
That’s not right
If you’re working with medical grade MC, it’s best to confirm with your IOR what he prefers for the extra ground connection as I’ve seen them request it in 3 different ways. Also, always use the anti-shorts regardless of whether your connectors are UL listed. I’ve witnessed an inspector force us to redo an entire section because of them. It’s not worth picking that battle early on in the project
I’m a big fan, but you really need to get rid of those rings. You’re going to lose a finger one day or get electrocuted. Stay safe!
I totally get where you’re coming from, Mark. When I’m working on electrical stuff, I always make sure to keep my jewelry, hoodies strings, and earphones tucked away inside my shirt, too.
