How should I go about sanding drywall that’s been stained with wood?

Before painting, make sure to sand, scrape, and prime the surface with spray Kilz or Bin stain-blocking primer. Apply a skim coat if necessary, then sand, prime, and paint.

I don’t see any signs of taping on those patches. I understand that everyone has their own standards for what looks good, but I suggest starting with sanding, taping, more sanding, applying a topcoat, sanding again, and then painting. It looks like a bit of a mess with all three of them.

It looks like might have taped it. Those are cleats used for shelving that was added after the drywall was put up.

Ronja Nikula

Looks terrible. I’m not an expert, but I would definitely fix that up.

It’s not actually wood. It tore the paper. You should cover it with kilz, add some mud, and then paint over it.

Alexandra Frazier

Hey, did you know that specializes in wood staining?

Arnold Ross

Pointed out that the paper appears to be rubbed off, but noted that the solution is the same for both situations

Recommended searching for “4-gang wall plate 3-toggle 1-decora” on Google. On Amazon, he suggested looking for Leviton P326-I 4-Gang 3-Toggle 1-Decora/GFCI Device Combination Wallplate in Ivory for $6

Gabriel Park

Where do you live, ? Switching up the grill, huh?

Gabriel Park

Small world! I actually grew up in DeKalb, even though I don’t live there anymore. Just a tip, if I were you, I would replace the old school toggle switches with new DeCora switches. You can also get a 4 gang Decora face plate to complete the upgrade. It may not change anything functionally, but it’s nice to have a modern touch. Best of luck with your project!

Recommends checking out lowes or Home Depot for the wall plate.

From leviton is creating a wall plate that can be pieced together if you’re unable to find any alternatives.

Alvin Griffin

Using a sander would be helpful.

Oscar Boyer

Instead of doing a lot of work, why not just use Kilz to cover it up before painting?
