How should I best utilize the space under my stairs for both my kids now and future tote storage needs, considering the furnace vents and framing options?

Hey, I’m looking for some ideas on how to create a hideaway under the stairs. I’ve already had the electrical moved to a different wall, but I’m stuck on what to do with the opening. We plan to use it for storage once the kids are out of the house.

I have some return air vents that I don’t think can be closed off because of the furnace’s efficiency. Any suggestions on how to handle this? Should I leave the bottom drywalled and have the kids step over to get in, or should I make a wider opening?

Another thought I had was to cut one or two of the studs in the doorway and frame a box, adding a header and king studs. What do you think?

The air ducts are kind of restrictive when it comes to access. And having a step over with a door can be risky too. Ever wonder what’s behind the wall to the left? Maybe adding a door on that side could be an option?

That was my initial reaction, I peered through a hole and saw where all the plumbing and water is being installed for the 1/2 bath and first floor master bedroom

That’s unfortunate. It seems like the other side would have accommodated a full-sized door. Is there enough space to construct a floor just above the air vents? You might lose a bit of height, but the rest of the area could be utilized for storage. Instead of a door, consider installing a pair of cupboard doors. It may not look as appealing, but it would provide access without the need to rework the ductwork or plumbing.

You could consider contacting an HVAC professional to see if they can merge those into one vent. It would simplify adding a door. It seems strange to have two so near each other.

Emilia Skjold

Great idea! They’re scheduled to come take a look on Thursday!

How about putting in a door with a lower threshold? It’ll be so much simpler to move the totes in and out once the kids are not around!

Oh yeah, I recall a furnace with 2 cold air returns. One took in air from a big great room and the other from the rest of the house. I’ve never witnessed 2 right next to each other.

Brent Coleman

Same here! I’ve encountered many peculiar things in construction.

Sue Gibson

I’m considering a small hidden/secret door that could be covered by a table.

Reposition the air ducts and install a suitable access door. If you plan to use it for storage in the future, you’ll appreciate having done so.

Are you storing the kids under there now?

Emilia Skjold

Would be better off with a lock and a sliding window for tossing snacks in.
