How should I approach skimming the stair area with joint compound to achieve a smooth surface?

Could I just use joint compound and sand to patch it up? And how would you recommend skimming the area near the stairs to make sure the surface is smooth?

For the first coat, I recommend using a setting type compound like durabond to get started. Then, switch to regular compound for the finishing coats. Make sure to feather it out wide for a smooth finish.

That’s correct, just remove any loose plaster before proceeding.

Make sure to dampen the brown coat first before applying. It helps with grip.

Definitely! Just grab some mesh tape to go along with it.

At , there’s no need to tape this one. It’s a solid wall, not a timber frame.
