How do I properly prep a textured wall with flat paint for traditional wallpaper installation, and are there any recommended videos or tips to ensure it sticks securely?

Hey there! So, I’m planning on putting up wallpaper in our nursery since I’m expecting. The wall already has a bit of texture and is painted with flat paint. Any advice on how to prep the wall before I start? I’m deciding between traditional wallpaper and peel and stick, do you have a preference?

I’ve read conflicting advice online – some say to skim the wall first, but others say they had issues with the wallpaper not sticking because the skim wasn’t primed properly. Any helpful videos or tips you could share would be awesome. Thanks a bunch!

Congratulations! I wouldn’t recommend putting it over textured walls. You should definitely skim it first! Peel and stick is great because you can easily change it when your baby grows older. Check out reviews, but you can find some good ones for a low price on Amazon. Nuwallpaper has a wide variety of designs and is a decent product, although it might be a bit too smooth and shiny. I’ve had some up for over 2 years and it still looks new. Haokhome has a better texture, but fewer options and it tends to tear more during installation. I recently put some up, so I can’t speak to its durability. If you decide to go with traditional wallpaper, be sure to use a wallpaper primer first. This is supposed to make it easier to remove the paper when the time comes. Just remember that you have to let everything cure BEFORE putting up the wallpaper, no matter what type you choose. Allow at least 5 days to prime and paint after applying a skim coat, then another month for the paint to fully cure.

‘t forget to share some photos once you finish! Hope you enjoy the process!

Hey, maybe try sanding the texture down instead. Just make sure you wear protective gear and expect a bit of a mess. The walls don’t need to be super smooth, just not heavily textured. If you’re unsure, do a test and leave it up for a few days to see how it looks and holds up.

I painted over where the seams met so if it shrinks at all, the gap will be the same color as the wallpaper.

I agree with the anonymous participant, using liner paper is great because it provides a smooth surface for your work and helps you get better at working with paper.
