How did you transform your detached garage into an artist’s studio, and what tips do you have for others looking to do the same?
Our old fixer upper had a separate workshop (which used to be a garage) that was in pretty rough shape. As an artist, I was thrilled to have a studio right on our property when we bought the place! My husband tackled a lot of the interior demo work, and we put it all back together ourselves. We decided to hire out the electrical work. I took on the challenge of insulating for the first time, and I’m the one in the family who handles the drywall and mudding. I filled in the notched drywall around the 2×4’s with mud, and so far, they’re holding up well. The floor took quite a bit of elbow grease – I cleaned it ten times, then applied an Aquatint color with a water-based sealant. We got some cool color gradient lights from Amazon by the brand Barriana, and they have a dimming feature (which can be adjusted smaller – I definitely recommend them). We opted to simply plug them in with a cord that has a switch, rather than hardwiring them. It’s not completely finished yet, but you know how it goes with DIY projects – sometimes “good enough” is good enough. Gotta start getting
