How did you transform your dark kitchen into a bright and modern space without painting the cabinets?

Hey there! Thanks for welcoming me into the group! I just had to share this DIY project I’ve been working on for the past couple of weeks. Our kitchen, which we’ve been living with for two years, has been dubbed the “dark hole kitchen” and I finally reached my breaking point 🤣

Here’s how it went down: We carefully removed all the dark glass mosaic tile (before putting in our new counters) to avoid damaging the drywall. After that, I sanded, cleaned, applied joint compound, sanded again, and put on Gardz primer to prep the walls for the new backsplash (once the counters were in). We also swapped out the black power outlets for white ones.

For supplies, I used MAPEI Large format tile and stone mortar, MAPEI Flexcolor CQ grout (which is awesome because it doesn’t need a sealer), and MAPEI grout matching caulk. The backsplash is Mohawk Grand Pebbles mosaic tile in Ice White.

Our Dove Lace countertops, under mounted stainless steel sink, and champaign gold faucet are all from Lowes and I can’t recommend them enough!

I’m trying to work with the maple wood cabinets and trim in

The faucet looks really nice. If it’s a gold tone, maybe switch the cabinet pulls to match. It would tie in nicely with the gold accent and give your cabinets an update.

Any tips or videos on removing the backsplash? I’m about to tackle my glass mosaic and feeling a bit nervous 😬

Your kitchen redo looks amazing! It’s incredible how wall colors can totally change the look of wood.
