How did you transform a weird closet into a functional mud room with a walk-in pantry and create a gate to keep young children out?

I’m not trying to critique your design, just genuinely wondering why the shelves aren’t flush like the bottom row? It seems like the small gap is just wasted space. I’m just curious if there’s a reason for this that I might not be considering (maybe aesthetics?)
Hey , I wanted to try something a bit different. I brainstormed a few ideas and went with this approach because it allowed me to add an extra 793 square inches of shelf space using 2×12 boards. The corners are specifically used for holding cans since they are heavy and less likely to cause the shelves to bend in the corners. It turned out to be more effective this way.
