How crucial is it to seal the cut end of a door in a basement with primer and paint to prevent potential problems?

How crucial is it to prime/paint the cut end of a door to seal it? Has anyone experienced issues from not sealing the end? What are the potential consequences? This is specifically for a basement. Appreciate any insights.
I’ve been doing remodeling for 25 years. I can’t recall ever coming across an existing door with all 6 sides sealed.
If it’s been cut, I would definitely recommend painting or sealing it, especially if it’s wood or MDF.
