How challenging would it be to remove the ledge bump out in the photo and install a window that extends all the way to the sink to brighten up the room?
Hey there! I really appreciate all the input I’ve received. Our kitchen is set up with the bedroom directly above, so unfortunately, a skylight isn’t in the cards for us. I’m thinking down the road about switching out the countertops for a lighter quartz. As for the cabinets, I’m not planning on painting them, but I might paint the island a lighter shade. I noticed the previous owners added a bunch of can lights to brighten up the room, along with a sunroom. Now, I’m wondering, would it be a big hassle to remove the ledge and bump out in the window (marked in red on the photo) and replace it with a window that extends all the way to the sink (highlighted in yellow on the photo)? Thanks for any advice you can offer on how to make that window above the sink larger. It’s the only window in our spacious kitchen, and it just feels so dim in there all the time.
I’d start by changing the lighting. I’ve got a really dark house and I’ve tried everything. Finally, a lighting expert told me that no amount of paint will brighten up a dark room. You need some good, bright light. And let me tell you, making that window bigger is gonna be expensive and probably won’t even make much of a difference. Head over to Menards and check out their selection of super bright, beautiful lighting options.
I feel like a garden window would be perfect for that area.
I totally get what you’re saying – making it taller or removing cabinets on the sides would definitely look strange and you’d lose storage space. I agree with about adding lighting – under cabinet and hanging overhead.
Changing the size of the window is a big project. You’ll have to rebuild the bump out and take out the upper cabinets. If you go with the garden window, it will jut out pretty far and could be a potential hazard.
Wow, that’s really pricey 😳.
I believe this house has two stories, at least that’s what I can tell from the picture. If I’m mistaken, maybe you could think about installing a sun tube. Despite their small size, they let in a surprising amount of light. We put one in our bathroom with no outside windows and it made a huge difference in brightening up the space.
Let’s consider adding a skylight to bring in more natural light.
