Do you have any thoughts on how we can solve this issue?
Just wondering – do you know what material this is made of? It resembles wood, but it might also be laminate or something else?

How about using a pilot bit along with a plug cutting set? You pilot a hole, drill deep enough for a plug, drive a screw, glue the plug in, cut off the excess plug with a razor saw, touch up with a stain pen and a satin water base. There’s also a special screw available where the drive head snaps off, that could be another solution. GRK also offers a trim head screw that leaves a small hole you can putty.
