How can we fix small spots in a rubbed-off cabinet finish without repainting the entire set?

Can you give me a hand with the cabinet finish? There are lots of tiny spots where the finish has been worn off, ranging from dime to quarter size. Any suggestions on how to make them less noticeable without having to repaint all the cabinets? Is there some kind of magic fix for this?
Are the stairs currently painted or stained? It would be really helpful to see some pictures. If they were painted, did you hire professionals or do it yourself? And were they sprayed or rolled?
